A home addition should never look like an "add-on." It should feel like it was always there. In Sandy Springs, Atlanta Waterscapes was brought in to provide the finishing touch to a stunning kitchen remodel and room extension.

The Custom Hearth

We designed a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace that acts as the bridge between the existing home and the new space. Using a "dry-stack" aesthetic, the masonry reflects the natural beauty of the North Georgia landscape.

Why Stone?

Beyond the beauty, a custom stone fireplace provides incredible thermal mass, helping to regulate the temperature of the room.

Whether you are looking for a wood-burning traditional hearth or a gas-insert modern feature, our stonework is designed to increase your property value and provide a gathering place for generations to come.

How We Build Custom Stone Fireplaces

Every fireplace we build starts with John at the stoneyard. He walks the yard with the homeowner and helps hand-pick the color, texture, and cut so the finished piece matches the house instead of fighting it.

After that, our crew pours a reinforced foundation, sets every stone by hand, and installs the firebox, flue, and any gas lines ourselves. No subcontractors on the stone or the fire components. No manufactured veneer bolted to a metal frame. It's real natural stone, laid the way masonry's been laid for the last hundred years.

Learn more on our Fire Pits & Fireplaces service page.

Related Stone & Fire Projects

Three other projects worth looking at if you like this one:

The Marietta Masterpiece — a wood-burning outdoor fireplace in a luxury gazebo, with a 7-foot by 2-foot solid stone mantel that took a seven-man team to set.

Taming the Georgia Terrain — solid stone steps down to a custom fire pit and seating wall, built to hold up through Atlanta's heavy rains.

The Buckhead Backyard Transformation — tiered retaining walls with a mosaic stone face, same hand-laid craftsmanship on a much bigger yard.

Serving Sandy Springs and the Surrounding Area

A lot of Sandy Springs homes sit on wooded lots with older additions and uneven grades. Built-in stonework is a good fit there because it can make a room extension feel original to the house instead of tacked on.

Beyond Sandy Springs, we've built fire features, patios, walls, and water features across Buckhead, Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Dunwoody, and Johns Creek. See our full service area for the list of cities we cover.

Building on a slope is one of Georgia's greatest landscaping challenges. In this massive Buckhead backyard renovation, Atlanta Waterscapes turned a steep incline into a functional, multi-level paradise.

Tiered Living

Using hand-selected natural stone, we constructed a series of sweeping retaining walls that create distinct levels for gardening and lounging. The "face" of the stonework uses a mosaic pattern that provides a timeless, Old-World feel while providing the structural integrity needed to support the upper lawn.

Safety Meets Style

To connect the patio to the upper tiers, we installed wide stone steps with a unique feature: embedded architectural lighting. By tucking low-voltage LEDs directly into the stone risers, we ensured the backyard remains safe and breathtaking long after the sun goes down. This project is a testament to how professional stonework can turn "unusable" land into the most valuable part of a home.

How We Build Retaining Walls on Steep Lots

A retaining wall on a slope like this one does more work than it looks. Under the mosaic face, there's drainage behind the wall, compacted backfill, and footers sized for the load above. That's what actually holds back the hillside.

Without those hidden details, a wall on a slope will fail within a few winters. Georgia's freeze-thaw cycles crack poured concrete and shift paver walls over time. A hand-laid natural stone wall has some give to it, and that's what keeps it standing.

Learn more on our Stone Walls service page.

Related Stonework Projects

Three other projects worth looking at on similarly tricky lots:

The $85,000 Backyard Transformation — an 80-foot stone wall hand-laid along a West Cobb hillside down to a swimming pool, a full month on-site.

Taming the Georgia Terrain — 18-inch-deep solid stone steps down to a custom fire pit, built to handle Atlanta's heavy rains.

Custom Fireplace in Sandy Springs — a floor-to-ceiling dry-stack stone fireplace built as part of a kitchen remodel and room extension.

Serving Buckhead and the Surrounding Area

Buckhead homes tend to sit on bigger lots with more grade changes, and a lot of them have yards that drop off behind the house. That's exactly the kind of terrain where tiered walls and stone steps turn a steep, unusable slope into flat ground worth using.

Beyond Buckhead, we've built retaining walls, patios, and water features across Sandy Springs, Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Dunwoody, and Johns Creek. See our full service area for the list of cities we cover.

At Atlanta Waterscapes, we believe a water feature should be heard as much as it is seen. Two of our recent installations in Decatur and West Atlanta showcase how different "soundscapes" can transform a property.

The Decatur Sphere (Left)

In Decatur, we installed a "Soothing Sound" fountain. This feature utilizes a custom-made basin sourced from Tennessee, topped with a decorative stone sphere.

While a small amount of water crests over the ball for visual effect, the majority of the flow is engineered to create a deep, resonant trickling sound that masks neighborhood noise and provides a tranquil atmosphere for the homeowners.

The West Side Palm (Right)

For a grand circular driveway on the West Side, we modified an existing feature into a "Palm Tree" masterpiece. This architectural fountain features four spouts aligned to the cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) and a central palm tree statuary.

Topped with decorative Black Mexican Pebbles, this fountain creates a high-end "resort entry" feel from the moment guests pull into the drive.

How We Build Custom Fountains

A good fountain is two crafts in one: stonework you can see and plumbing you can't. Both matter equally. The stone sets the look. The pump, basin, and filtration are what keep it running for years instead of clogging up by the second summer.

John walks the site first to figure out what the fountain is supposed to do. Some clients want pure visual impact at the entry. Others want sound to mask a busy road or a pool pump. The Decatur build on this page is mostly about sound; the West Side Palm splits the difference.

We use natural stone picked from the yard by the homeowner, commercial-grade pumps rated for continuous operation, and filtration that runs for years with minimal work. Most of our fountains just need a pump check once a season.

Learn more on our Custom Fountains service page.

Related Estate Water Features

Two more projects worth looking at:

The Master of Water — covers three other water features: a 15,000 GPH "noise curtain" fountain built 150 feet from a major interstate, an under-deck fountain, and a turtle pond.

The $85,000 Backyard Transformation — a month on-site in West Cobb that produced a flagstone floor, an 80-foot stone wall, and a full outdoor kitchen.

Serving Decatur, West Atlanta, and the Surrounding Area

A fountain earns its keep year-round. That's why we've installed them at front drives and in back gardens from Decatur to Buckhead. Running water covers traffic, pool pumps, and neighbors without anyone having to touch a speaker.

Beyond Decatur and the West Side, we've built fountains, stone walls, patios, and fire features across Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, Dunwoody, Johns Creek, and Peachtree Corners. See our full service area for the list of cities we cover.

In the heart of Marietta, Atlanta Waterscapes recently completed a project that redefines the concept of a "screened-in porch." The centerpiece of this luxury gazebo is a custom-built, wood-burning stone fireplace that demands attention.

The Craftsmanship

The defining feature of this build is the solid stone mantel. Measuring 7 feet by 2 feet, this massive piece of natural stone required a seven-man team to set it in place. This isn't just a fireplace; it’s a structural anchor.

Below the hearth, we integrated custom cabinetry to discreetly house controls for the home’s TV and stereo systems—blending rustic masonry with modern technology.

The Exterior Flow

Just outside the gazebo, the stonework continues into a multi-level concrete pond and waterfall. We used natural stone edging to create a seamless transition between the manicured lawn and the aquatic environment.

The project is rounded out by a full outdoor kitchen, featuring a built-in grill and burner set into matching stone cabinetry, proving that functionality and luxury can exist in perfect harmony.

How We Set a Seven-Man Stone Mantel

A 7-foot by 2-foot stone mantel is a piece of natural stone heavy enough to need a seven-man crew just to lift and place. Getting it level, square, and balanced takes planning before anyone touches a stone.

Before the mantel lift, the crew pours the footing, sets the firebox, and builds up the wood-burning stonework around it. The mantel stone is positioned next to the work area and checked against the shoulders of the finished stonework. Only then does the lift happen. Once that stone is down, it isn't moving again.

This is the kind of anchor piece that turns a porch into a real outdoor room.

Related Full-Build Projects

Three other projects with the same level of on-site stonework:

Custom Fireplace in Sandy Springs — a floor-to-ceiling dry-stack stone fireplace built as the bridge between an existing kitchen and a new room extension.

The $85,000 Backyard Transformation — a full month on-site in West Cobb with a flagstone floor, 80-foot stone wall, outdoor kitchen, and a commercial-grade pizza oven.

The Buckhead Backyard Transformation — sweeping tiered retaining walls with a mosaic Old-World stone face, turning a steep slope into a multi-level yard with embedded LED lighting.

Serving Marietta and the Surrounding Area

Marietta has some of the larger lots in the metro, which makes it a good fit for builds like this one. Full outdoor rooms with stone fireplaces, kitchens, and water features living in the same space work best when there's room to let the stonework breathe.

Beyond Marietta, we've built fire features, outdoor kitchens, ponds, and stone walls across Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Dunwoody, and Johns Creek. See our full service area for the list of cities we cover.

A client in West Cobb wanted to transform a massive, empty backyard into a multi-functional entertainment hub.

The project required a mix of heavy-duty structural masonry and high-end aesthetic finishes, all while coordinating with master carpenters for a large cedar structure.

Project Solution

We spent a full month on-site. We began by laying the foundation for a sprawling flagstone floor before the pavilion was even built. We constructed an 80-foot stone wall that follows the natural terrain down to the swimming pool area.

Project Highlights

The Gourmet Hub: An outdoor kitchen featuring a $8,500 commercial-grade pizza oven insert, flat-top grill, and prep sink.

The Focal Point: A massive stone fireplace with integrated timber ventilation and a custom-mounted TV.

The Detail: Every stone was hand-laid to ensure the "Kaufman" legacy of quality was visible in every corner.

How We Build a Full Backyard From the Ground Up

A month on-site is what it actually takes to build a yard of this size start to finish. The flagstone floor had to go in before the pavilion was framed so the pavers would sit on a proper base instead of being dropped in afterward. The 80-foot wall follows the slope down to the pool because that's where the grade wants to go. Fighting the grade would have doubled the footing work.

Everything had to be sequenced so each stage supported the next. The fireplace, the pizza oven, the grill, the prep sink, the wall, and the flagstone all had to coordinate with the cedar pavilion the carpenters were building. One crew stepping on another's work adds weeks.

We kept everyone moving by planning the sequence before the first footing was poured.

We solved a major security problem in Tucker, GA, by creating a beautiful stone mailbox that hides a heavy-duty "bank vault" door on the back. It keeps packages safe from thieves and weather while looking like a piece of high-end masonry.

Client Challenge

A homeowner in Tucker, GA, was tired of "porch pirates" stealing deliveries. She needed a way to secure packages that didn't involve an ugly plastic bin sitting in her driveway.

Our Solution

We designed a custom stone mailbox that doubles as a high-security drop box. On the exterior, it features beautiful natural stone veneer that matches the home’s original masonry.

The "Vault" Secret

Hidden on the backside is a heavy-duty metal "bank vault" door. Couriers can drop packages into a secure internal compartment, and the homeowner can retrieve them using a key from the back. It’s a perfect blend of 21st-century security and old-world craftsmanship.

Amazon Mailbox

Here's a picture of the finished project.

Why Stone Mailboxes Hold Up Better Than Plastic Drop Boxes

Most "secure mailbox" solutions on the market are plastic or powder-coated metal boxes bolted to a pre-formed base. They look like a utility meter, and they still get ripped off their pad by someone with a pickup truck and a chain.

A proper stone mailbox is built like a footing: poured concrete base, full masonry column, and natural stone hand-laid on the face. That's what makes it match the rest of the house instead of standing out as an afterthought.

The "bank vault" door on the back is the functional part. The stonework is what makes it something a homeowner actually wants at the end of the driveway.

Related Stone and Masonry Projects

Three other projects worth looking at:

The Mailbox: Security Vaults and Architectural Statement Pieces — our full overview of custom stone mailbox work, including the Amazon Vault plus a geometric planter build, a stucco restoration in West Cobb, and a classic stone veneer build.

The Buckhead Backyard Transformation — sweeping tiered retaining walls with a mosaic Old-World stone face, showing the same hand-laid craftsmanship at yard scale.

Custom Fireplace in Sandy Springs — a floor-to-ceiling dry-stack stone fireplace built as the bridge between a kitchen remodel and a new room extension.

Serving Tucker and the Surrounding Area

A stone mailbox with a secure drop compartment solves the package-theft problem at the curb instead of trying to fix it at the front door. It's a one-and-done build that works for any home, not just gated estates in Tucker like this one.

Beyond Tucker, we've built stone mailboxes, fire features, and water features across Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Dunwoody, and Johns Creek. See our full service area for the list of cities we cover.

Georgia is famous for its hills, and this property had a steep descent from the driveway to the backyard fire pit. The homeowner wanted a path that felt "solid" and wouldn't wash away during Atlanta’s heavy rains.

Project Plan

We skipped the thin pavers and went for the "heavy hitters." We installed solid stone steps measuring 18 inches deep by 3 feet wide. These stones are so massive they required a three-man team just to set each one in place.

Results

A grand, permanent stone staircase that leads to a custom-built fire pit and seating wall. We finished the area with slate gravel—a "barefoot-friendly" alternative to mulch that stays level and provides excellent drainage.

How We Build Stone Steps That Last on Steep Lots

Installing stone steps on a slope in Atlanta starts with the footing, not the pavers. The footing has to hold up when the clay under it freezes and thaws through the winter. The stones have to be heavy enough that water running down the hill can't move them. Each one has to sit dead level so the descent feels solid underfoot.

These stones are 18 inches deep and three feet wide. They weigh enough that it takes three people to set each one. That's not a marketing number. A stone that big actually weighs that much, and that's why the staircase still feels solid years after install.

A lot of Atlanta-area yards have grade changes steep enough to need more than a dirt path and some railroad ties. Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Roswell, and parts of Marietta are full of lots like this one, with driveways up top, living space below, and a descent in the middle that can either be dealt with properly or fought every winter.

At Atlanta Waterscapes, we believe water is more than a visual accent; it is a "noise curtain."

For over 30 years, John Gray has been engineering aquatic environments that serve a dual purpose: providing breathtaking beauty and reclaiming the peace of a property from the roar of Atlanta’s traffic.

Attracting Attention

One of our most high-visibility projects sits just 150 feet from a major interstate highway. This wasn't just a landscaping job; it was a branding exercise for a commercial building. We constructed an 8-foot tall rock wall with a 15' x 10' footprint, designed specifically to act as a visual showcase for thousands of drivers passing by daily.

Further down at the intersection of Buford Highway and Lennox, we were brought in to perform a complex rescue mission on a commercial "Horseshoe" waterfall. The feature suffered from a failing liner and persistent leaks. We didn't just repair it; we rebuilt it. Dealing with the intense Southern heat means managing algae is a primary concern, so we installed a high-efficiency filtration system and chemical balance protocol to keep this Atlanta landmark crystal clear.

Turtle Pond

Residential water features often require an even higher level of "aquaculture" expertise. We recently completed a massive 40' x 14' rectangular turtle pond designed to be viewed from the home’s portico.

This project was a feat of engineering:

The Build: 2 feet deep, lined with a 42-mil thick, fish-friendly rubber liner.

The Environment: A bed of pea gravel and sand on the bottom to encourage natural biological cycles.

The Detail: The customer personally hand-picked the "Arrim" plants, which were strategically placed to suck up nitrogen from the water.

The Engineering: An intricate natural and mechanical filtration system ensures the water stays healthy enough for turtles to lay eggs in the surrounding rock work.

The 15,000 GPH "Noise Curtain"

For a rural property in North Georgia, the challenge wasn't visuals—it was acoustics. The home was plagued by road noise. We designed a river rock stream featuring separate pumps that push between 12,000 and 15,000 gallons per hour (GPH).

By building multiple spillways that allow the water to "bubble and cascade," we created a dynamic soundscape. This creates a "noise curtain" that effectively drowns out traffic, turning a dynamic backyard into a secluded sanctuary. We lit the entire feature from within and without, ensuring the "motion" of the water is accentuated through the night.

Under-Deck Fountain

Sometimes, the challenge is space. We were hired to build an ornamental concrete fountain tight against an existing deck. This required us to run all the plumbing and a specialized external pump system hidden entirely underneath the deck boards.

Crafted from premium Bluestone rock, this fountain features an adjustable flow rate, allowing the homeowner to choose between a soothing trickle and a more robust waterfall effect. It’s a perfect example of how we "blend" our work into the existing topography of a home.

Serving Atlanta and the Surrounding Area

Water features work across the whole metro, but noise-masking installs tend to go in where Atlanta traffic is the loudest: near I-285, GA-400, and stretches of Buford Highway. A well-tuned water feature is often the difference between a patio you abandon and one you actually use.

A client wanted a lush, "evergreen" feel between her stepping stones that could handle foot traffic and look pristine year-round.

The Solution

This project was a feat of logistics. To get the density the client wanted, we had to source over 1,800 Dwarf Mondo Grass plants, visiting three different nurseries across the state to find enough high-quality stock.

Project Result

A stunning, vibrant green walkway that wraps around the house. Dwarf Mondo is "unkillable," meaning the homeowner can walk barefoot across the stones and the grass without ever worrying about damaging the landscape.

How We Plan Walkway Transitions Between Stone and Plants

A walkway that mixes stone and plants has to handle foot traffic without the stones shifting and without the plants dying back between them. That means stepping stones heavy enough to stay put, plant spacing that fills in without overgrowing the stones, and ground prep that lets the plants thrive without rotting the root zone.

Dwarf Mondo Grass was the right pick here because it handles foot traffic, stays green year-round, and grows slowly enough that it doesn't need constant trimming back. Sourcing 1,800 plants of matching size and color meant driving to three nurseries across the state. A single nursery couldn't supply that much quality stock at once.

Serving Atlanta's Landscaped Neighborhoods

A lot of Atlanta homes have side yards and back gardens that could be pretty but end up as mulch paths that turn muddy half the year. The fix is usually the same: set real stones, fill the gaps with something that actually lives, and walk away.

Townhouse living often means tiny backyards. This client had a "postage stamp" sized yard and a dog, leading to a muddy, unusable mess. Project Solution…

Townhouse living often means tiny backyards. This client had a "postage stamp" sized yard and a dog, leading to a muddy, unusable mess.

Project Solution

We maximized every square inch. We installed a three-sided stone wall to define the space and used decorative crushed slate instead of grass.

The Engineering

Because townhouses are often built in a row, drainage is a nightmare. We engineered a "reverse swale" to ensure water runs away from the foundation and down the middle of the property, keeping the patio (and the dog) dry even after a storm.

How Drainage Saves a Small Yard

On a townhouse lot, the yard is small and usually sitting between two other yards that drain into it. When the neighbors' water runs into yours, no amount of new grass or mulch is going to stop it from turning into a swamp.

The fix here was a reverse swale: a shallow grade channel down the middle of the yard that collects runoff and routes it away from the foundation before it can pool. Combined with crushed slate in place of grass and a three-sided stone wall to anchor the space, the yard stayed dry after storms for the first time in years. The slate lets water move through instead of sitting on top.

Serving Atlanta's Townhome and Small-Lot Neighborhoods

Townhome developments are everywhere in the metro, from Midtown to Buckhead to Brookhaven, and the yards are always small. The difference between a useful yard and a muddy mess is usually drainage and hardscape choice, not square footage.

Beyond townhomes, we've built patios, drainage systems, and stone walls across Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Dunwoody, and Johns Creek. See our full service area for the list of cities we cover.

In real estate and home design, the mailbox is the "handshake" of your property. It is the very first thing a guest or a potential buyer sees.

At Atlanta Waterscapes, we specialize in transforming this overlooked utility into a high-end masonry feature that provides security, durability, and a massive boost to your home’s curb appeal.

The "Amazon Vault"

For a gated estate in Tucker, GA, we built a custom stone mailbox with a heavy-duty "bank vault" door hidden on the backside. Couriers drop packages into a secure internal compartment, and the homeowner retrieves them from the rear.

Geometric Planter: Masonry with a Soft Touch

For this new residential build, the owner wanted to move away from a standard "post and box" and create something with character. We used 3-to-4-inch thick natural stone, precision-cut into geometric squares and rectangles for a clean, architectural look.

The Design Feature: We integrated custom planter sections on both sides of the mailbox. These aren't just for show—we used amended soil to ensure that seasonal flowers or climbing vines can take root and thrive. It allows the hardscaping to "breathe" and change with the seasons, creating a dynamic look that stands out on the block.

Stucco Restoration: Matching and Repair

Not every project starts from scratch. In West Cobb, we were called in after someone "clocked" the original mailbox—meaning they ran into it with their vehicle. The goal was a perfect restoration.

The Precision: We didn't just rebuild it; we matched the stucco color and texture exactly to the home’s exterior. This involved pouring a new footing, performing professional block work, and applying multiple coats of specialized stucco. The result is a seamless addition that looks like it has been part of the property since day one.

Classic Stone Veneer

Sometimes, the goal is simply a clean, rugged, and timeless look. Our classic stone veneer mailboxes are built to withstand the test of time. John personally works with every client to visit the stoneyard, ensuring the colors and textures of the stone perfectly complement the driveway and the surrounding landscape.

Serving the Atlanta Metro

A custom stone mailbox is a one-time install that lives in front of your house for decades, so it has to match the property. We pick the stone at the yard with every client and size the pillar, planters, and drop compartment to fit the home, not the other way around.
